Why I love Hamilton!

Updated: Jan 1, 2021

Before Anton and I moved to Hamilton, Ontario we happily lived in the busy city of Mississauga. We both worked in Mississauga and most of our friends lived in or around Peel. Eventually we decided that we needed to find a bigger home. This began our search for our current home. Anton suggested we look in Hamilton. I remember the day we drove up to our current home. It was an open house and I thought the street was so pretty with all the mature trees hanging over the street like a picture frame. We walked through the house and I was in love. There is original hardwood and stain glass all throughout the home. This home like many other homes in Hamilton had the character and charm I had been craving. That was that. We moved to Hamilton and this is when I began to fall in love with this city.

Hamilton has so much history. Everywhere you look there is some historical landmark. A few to mention are Dundurn Castle, Battle of Stoney Creek and the first ever Tim Hortons. Did you know that the first ever telephone exchange between the British Empire and Canada happened in 1878 in Hamilton? Pretty incredible.

Our family loves to explore outdoors. In our first summer here, my husband showed me the rail trail. To get to the rail trail you need to climb very steep stairs. I was surprised at how many Hamiltonians were out climbing these stairs for exercise at 8am on a Saturday. The rail trail follows the beautiful Bruce Trail on the Niagara Escarpment. Our backyard is literally backing onto the Niagara escarpment. There is an unlimited number of parks and conservation areas to explore. In fact, Hamilton is home to over 100 waterfalls and cascades.

Another favourite Hamilton activity we have is touring little shops throughout the city. Ottawa street is full of great restaurants and antique shops. James Street is full of amazing food and boutique shops. Locke street has a dog café, restaurants, shops and is just down the street from the most beautiful historic mansions. We often grab a coffee and walk through the neighbourhood to marvel at these magical homes.

The FOOD! The food in Hamilton is delicious. I have celiac disease and often have a difficult time eating out. That is not a problem in Hamilton. There are so many celiac friendly restaurants here. My husband, a self proclaimed foody, loves the restaurant scene here in Hamilton. Some of our favourites so far are The Mule, Caro, Planted, French, Pho Dui Bo, Motel and Brux House. There are so many restaurants we have yet to discover.

The most important thing to mention is the people in Hamilton. We immediatly felt a sense of community when we moved here. Our neighbours welcomed us with open arms. Never have I known the names of neighbours. Everyone we have encountered has been so unfailingly polite and kind. This is a proud city, but it is also a city with a big heart. It has exceeded my expectations and we aren’t going anywhere anytime soon.
